Phendimetrazine Tartrate Information

What is Phendimetrazine?

Phendimetrazine is a sympathomimetic amine, which is similar to an amphetamine. Phendimetrazine is also known as an "anorectic" or "anorexigenic" medication. Phendimetrazine stimulates the central nervous system (nerves and brain), which increases your heart rate and blood pressure and decreases your appetite.Phendimetrazine is recommended by physicians as a short-term supplement to diet and exercise in the treatment of obesity.

How is Phendimetrazine Tartrate supplied?

Currently, the medication is available in 35 mg tablet, 35 mg capsule and105 mg (extended, controlled, or slow-release) capsule.

What is the appropriate dose of Phendimetrazine?
Individuals should take Phendimetrazine as prescribed by the physician.
Phendimetrazine is usually taken once a day (sustained release formula) or two to three times daily (immediate-release formula) before meals on an empty stomach. Phendimetrazine should not be taken in the evening because it may cause insomnia. Do not crush, chew, or open any "once-daily" Phendimetrazine tablets or capsules. Swallow them whole.Individuals should not take more of this medication than is prescribed for you. Excessive Phendimetrazine could be very dangerous to an individual's health.
What happens if an individual misses a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose or if it is already evening, skip the missed dose and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Individuals should not "double up" on the missed dose.

What happens if an individual overdoses?


Seek emergency medical attention and if necessary call 911!!

What are some of the symptoms of an overdose?

Symptoms of a Phendimetrazine overdose include restlessness, tremor, rapid breathing, confusion, hallucinations, panic, aggressiveness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, an irregular heartbeat, and seizures.

Are there any medications that interact with Phendimetrazine?


Phendimetrazine should not be used while taking (or less than 14 days after taking) a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor. This could result in extreme high blood pressure and other side effects.
  • Furoxone® (furazolidone)
  • Marplan® (isocarboxazid)
  • Nardil® (phenelzine
  • Matulane® (procarbazine)
  • Elepryl® (selegiline)
  • Parnate® (tranylcypromine)
Use of the following medications with Phendimetrazine may cause high blood pressure or irregular heartbeat:
  • Elavil® (amitriptyline)
  • Asendin® (amoxapine)
  • Anafranil® (clomipramine)
  • Pertofrane® (desipramine)
  • Sinequan® (doxepin)
  • Tofranil® (imipramine)
  • Aventyl® (nortriptyline)
  • Vivactil® (protriptyline)
  • Surmontil® (trimipramine)

In addition: Phendimetrazine may decrease the effects of blood-pressure lowering medications (guanethidine). Phendimetrazine may alter the effects of diabetic medication.

Phendimetrazine in conjunction with other CNS type stimulants may cause over stimulation & other adverse reactions such as.
  • Cold & Sinus medication
  • Caffeine
  • Herbal products including ephedra, mahuang, guarana extract
  • Over-the-counter diet products such as phenylpropanolamine AKA PPA
  • Medications with anorectic type side effects i.e. Cylert® (pemoline), Ritalin® (methylphenidate), Ventolin® (albuterol)
The safety and efficacy of combined Phendimetrazine with SSRI's and other various psychotherapeutic agents has not been established:
  • Celexa® (citalopram)
  • Prozac® (fluoxetine)
  • Luvox® (fluvoxamine)
  • Paxil® (paroxetine)
  • Zoloft® (sertraline)
  • Buspar® (buspirone)
  • Effexor® (venlafaxine)
  • Wellbutrin® (bupropion)
Who should not take Phendimetrazine?

Individuals should not take Phendimetrazine if they have a history of the following:

  • Celexa® (citalopram)
  • heart disease or high blood pressure
  • arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
  • glaucoma
  • drug or alcohol abuse
  • arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
  • glaucoma
  • drug or alcohol abuse
  • Individuals taking monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) i.e tranylcypromine (Parnate), or . isocarboxazid (Marplan), or phenelzine (Nardil) in the last 14 days
In addition, prior to taking this medication, individuals should inform the physician of the following history:
  • history of epilepsy or another seizure disorder
  • difficulty with your thyroid
  • anxiety disorder
  • diabetes
What else should individuals avoid while taking Phendimetrazine?
Individuals should use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Phendimetrazine may cause dizziness, blurred vision, or restlessness, and it may hide the symptoms of extreme tiredness. If you experience these effects, avoid hazardous activities. Do not take Phendimetrazine late in the day. A dose taken too late in the day can cause insomnia.

What are the possible side effects of Phendimetrazine?

If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Phendimetrazine and seek emergency medical attention:
  • Allergic reaction i.e. difficulty breathing
  • closing of your throat
  • swelling of your lips tongue, or face, or hives
  • irregular heartbeat or very high blood pressure
  • severe headache
  • blurred vision
  • hallucinations
  • abnormal behavior
  • confusion
Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. You may continue to take Phendimetrazine and talk to your physician if you experience the following:
  • restlessness or tremor
  • nervousness or anxiety
  • headache or dizziness
  • insomnia
  • dry mouth or an unpleasant taste in your mouth
  • diarrhea or constipation
  • impotence or changes in your sex drive
Please note: Phendimetrazine may be habit forming. Individuals can become physically and psychologically dependent on this medication, and withdrawal effects may occur if you stop taking it suddenly after several weeks of continuous use. Talk to your physician about stopping this medication gradually. Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Discuss with your physician about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Can individuals consume alcohol while taking Phendimetrazine?


Alcohol can increase the possibility of experiencing side effects with phendimetrazine.
Should women who are pregnant or breast-feeding take Phendimetrazine?
The safety of Phendimetrazine Tartrate in pregnancy and/or breast-feeding. has not been established. It is not known whether Phendimetrazine will harm an unborn baby or if the medication will be passed via the breast-feeding to cause harm to an infant. Therefore, Individuals should not take Phendimetrazine while pregnant and/or breast-feeding.
