What is Phentermine?

Phentermine hydrochloride is an appetite suppressant used for the short-term term treatment of obesity, it is used in conjunction with an overall diet plan to lose weight.

What is the mechanism of action of Phentermine?

Phentermine works by stimulating the hypothalamus gland, thus, affecting certain neurotransmitters to decrease appetite.

 Are there any contraindications to taking Phentermine?

  • Allergic reactions to the medication or the sympathomimetric amines
  • Glaucoma
  • Advanced artherosclerosis
  • The use of momoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor within the last 2 weeks
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Moderate to severe hypertension

Are there any side effects?

Common side effects include the following:

  • Irritability
  • Tiredness
  • Depression
  • Nervousness
  • Sense of well-being
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Dry mouth 

What is the appropriate dose?

Adults under sixty:Capsules - 15 to 37.5 mg each morning

Tablets - 15 to 37.5 mg each morning, alternatively, take 15 to 37.5 mg in divided doses one-half hour before meals

Adult 60 and over:

Consult your physician a reduced dose may be appropriate

Missed doses

Take as soon as you remember, If close to the next dose, skip and wait till the next dose.

Do not take more than the appropriate dose.

Are there any drug interactions?

Please inform your Physician concerning all medications that you are currently taking. Special consideration should be given to individuals taking the following high bloodpressure medications or MAO inhibitors.

  • Phenelzine
  • Furazolidine
  • Selegiline
  • Tranylcyprodine
     

What are the symptoms of a possible overdose?

  • Stomach cramps
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Irregular blood pressure
  • Fever
  • Confusion
  • Hallucinations
  • Restlessness
  • Tremor
  • Panic

What should be done in case of a suspected overdose?

An overdose of Phentermine is unlikely to be life-threatening. However, if an individual takes a much larger dose than recommended, call your Physician, emergency medical services (EMS), or the nearest poison control center immediately or 911 if needed.
 

Can I consume alcohol while taking Phentermine?

 Can I take Phentermine while being Pregnant?

Phentermine has not shown to cause birth defects in humans. Prior to taking this medication , tell your Physician if you are pregnant or you are planning to become pregnant in the near future.

Should Phentermine be taken while breast feeding?

Phentermine may pass into the breast milk, therefore you should consult your Physician prior to taking the medication while breast feeding.
 
Are there any other special concerns?

After you stop taking the medication, your body may need a period of time to adjust. Phentermine may affect blood sugar levels. You should consult your Physician if you have any concern. Notify your phsician if you should have any symptoms of nausea or vomiting, depression, fatigue or trembling after discontinuing Phentermine. Prior to dental procedures, inform your dentist that you are taking Phentermine.
 
Is phentermine indicated in children?

Phentermine is not recommended for children under the age of 18 years.
